Goals in Perspective

By Autumn Strode, EYT Champion

It is officially the 2025 bowling year, which means new experiences, accomplishments, and most importantly, new goals. The beginning of the year is so exciting, taking time to think of some of my new goals for the year, personal and bowling-related. These goals help provide a great motivator for me as I work at the things I want to get better at. The beginning of the year is the perfect time to set goals because it not only acts as a motivator, but it also gives you a way to measure success by the end of the year.

Looking back at my goals at the end of the year is a great way for me to measure my progress and decide what my next steps are in my bowling game.

To set goals for bowling, think about your strengths and weaknesses and what you would like to achieve. Thinking about my strengths and weaknesses, I may want to spend more time on targeting, but I might take that one step further and think about a specific area of the lane I would like to get better at playing. Think about what you would like to accomplish this year. Your goals should make you excited for the challenge and ready to work towards them.

Another great way to set goals is to think of your outer space goals. Outer space goals are goals that seem almost impossible, but they motivate you to work harder to achieve them. One of my outer space goals for 2025 is to make the top 10 at Jr. Gold. This is a huge outer space goal for me as there are a lot of girls who attend this competition, so it will be difficult, but it is a goal that will motivate me. The best goals are the goals that you are desperate to achieve, as they will work as the best motivators.

When setting goals, not only is it important to think about the goal itself but the steps you’re going to take to achieve it. Thinking about my Jr. Gold Outer Space goal, one of the things I have listed to help me achieve this goal is to practice many different types of lane play. At Jr. Gold, the patterns can and will force you out of your comfort zone, so it is important to be capable of playing any line the situation may call for. Making a plan of specific ways to go about reaching your goals is the best way to work for them and to give yourself the best chance of accomplishing them.

One other great motivator is to have a word of the year. Having a word for the year reminds you of your intentions and keeps you focused on what you want to achieve. For instance, this year, my word choice is “breakout.” My intention this year is to use all I learned last year to be competitive and win major tournaments. Everyone is somewhere different in their bowling journey, so everyone’s words and intentions will look different. It’s important to stay focused on your intentions when creating your word.

Use your goals and word of the year to push yourself to be the best version of yourself. Picture yourself reaching that goal you thought was impossible. Picking up the winning spare, grabbing the trophy, celebrating with my friends and family, and picturing all of these things, and the happiness it brings me is exactly what I work toward. Putting all of this into perspective, having one rough practice or tournament doesn’t seem such a huge price to pay, does it?

How to Balance School, Bowling, and Family Life: A Student’s Guide

As a student, life can feel like a juggling act—especially when you are trying to balance schoolwork, extracurricular activities like bowling, and spending quality time with your family. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the demands of academic deadlines, practice schedules, and family commitments. However, with the right strategies, you can strike a balance that allows you to excel in all areas without sacrificing your well-being or relationships. In this guide, we will explore practical steps on how to balance school, bowling, and family life, helping you thrive in both your personal and academic pursuits.

1. Understanding the Importance of Balance

First and foremost, it’s essential to understand that achieving balance is about managing your time, energy, and focus in a way that ensures you are not neglecting any of your core responsibilities. Whether it’s finishing a project for school, preparing for a bowling tournament, or having a movie night with your family, maintaining balance requires intentional planning.

Without balance, you risk feeling stressed, burned out, or even resentful of the different demands on your time. That’s why learning to juggle your commitments without feeling overwhelmed is key. By prioritizing and scheduling tasks effectively, you can perform well in school, be present during bowling practice or competitions, and still nurture your family life.

2. Effective Time Management Strategies

Time management is one of the most critical skills when balancing school, bowling, and family life. It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re juggling multiple commitments, but with a structured plan, you can keep everything organized.

Here are some time management strategies to help you:

  • Use a planner or digital calendar: Make a schedule that includes school deadlines, bowling practice, tournaments, and family events. This will give you a visual overview of your week and help you allocate your time efficiently.

  • Prioritize tasks: Identify urgent tasks, like school projects or upcoming tournaments, and complete those first. Use the Eisenhower matrix to distinguish between urgent and important tasks and tackle them accordingly.

  • Set time blocks: Assign specific blocks of time for schoolwork, practice, and family activities. Treat each of these as a non-negotiable appointment.

  • Avoid procrastination: Procrastination can throw off your schedule. Break large tasks into smaller, more manageable parts, and tackle them one by one.

By creating a well-structured timetable and sticking to it, you’ll be able to stay on track with all your responsibilities.

3. Setting Clear Goals

Setting clear, achievable goals is another powerful tool to help you stay focused and organized. When you set specific goals for your schoolwork, bowling, and family life, it provides you with direction and a sense of purpose.

Here’s how to set goals that will keep you motivated and on track:

  • Academic Goals: Whether it’s improving your grades in a particular subject, completing homework ahead of time, or mastering a specific concept, break down your academic goals into measurable tasks.

  • Bowling Goals: Whether you’re aiming to improve your scores, qualify for a tournament, or master a new technique, set clear benchmarks to help track your progress in bowling.

  • Family Goals: Create goals related to spending time with your family. For instance, planning a weekly family dinner or scheduling a weekend outing can help ensure you are present in family life.

By setting both short-term and long-term goals in each area, you’ll stay focused and motivated while maintaining balance.

4. Developing Mental Toughness

Mental toughness is the ability to stay focused, positive, and resilient in the face of challenges. When balancing school, bowling, and family life, you’ll inevitably face tough moments—tight schedules, tough school assignments, or a challenging bowling match. Mental resilience can help you navigate these situations without feeling overwhelmed or discouraged.

Here are some ways to build mental toughness:

  • Stay positive: Focus on the positive aspects of each responsibility. Remind yourself of why you love bowling and the importance of your education.

  • Practice mindfulness: Take moments to breathe, relax, and clear your mind, especially when you feel stressed.

  • Develop a growth mindset: View challenges as opportunities for growth. If you make a mistake, whether in school or bowling, use it as a chance to learn and improve.

By building mental toughness, you can maintain your focus and handle life’s challenges with resilience.

5. Building Support Systems

You don’t have to do everything alone. Building a strong support system of family, friends, and coaches can make balancing school, bowling, and family life much easier. Having a network of people who support your goals and understand your commitments is crucial.

Consider the following:

  • Communicate with your family: Share your schedule with your family members so they can support you in balancing school and bowling. Keep them informed about your practice schedules and any important academic deadlines.

  • Reach out to your coach: If you’re struggling with a heavy schedule, talk to your bowling coach. They may be able to adjust your training schedule or give you tips on how to improve your performance while maintaining balance.

  • Lean on friends: Your friends can provide moral support and can help you stay motivated when juggling responsibilities.

Having a reliable support system will provide encouragement, advice, and help when you need it most.

6. Embracing Flexibility

While structure is essential, it’s also crucial to embrace flexibility. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes, unexpected events or emergencies arise. Whether it’s a school deadline being moved up, an impromptu family gathering, or an unplanned change in your bowling schedule, being flexible and adaptable will help you manage change more effectively.

  • Be willing to adapt: If something comes up last minute, adjust your schedule to accommodate the change, but try to stay committed to your other priorities.

  • Learn to say no: While it’s great to participate in various activities, don’t overextend yourself. Saying no to additional commitments can help you maintain balance and prevent burnout.

Being flexible will allow you to better manage unexpected changes and keep all aspects of your life in harmony.

7. Prioritizing Self-Care

When you have a lot on your plate, it can be easy to neglect your health and well-being. However, prioritizing self-care is essential for maintaining energy, focus, and motivation.

Here’s how to prioritize self-care:

  • Sleep well: Make sure you’re getting enough rest each night. Lack of sleep affects your focus, memory, and overall performance.

  • Eat healthy: A balanced diet helps you stay energized and focused throughout your busy day.

  • Exercise regularly: Besides bowling, engage in other forms of exercise to keep your body strong and healthy.

  • Make time for relaxation: Whether it’s reading, meditating, or taking a walk, make sure to spend time unwinding and recharging.

Self-care is not selfish—it’s necessary for maintaining the physical and mental energy you need to juggle school, bowling, and family life.

8. Engaging with the Community

Lastly, staying engaged with your community can provide emotional support and strengthen your sense of belonging. Bowling clubs, school events, and family gatherings offer opportunities to engage with others who share your interests and values.

  • Join a bowling league or team: Becoming part of a team creates a sense of camaraderie and connection with others.

  • Attend family events: Make an effort to attend family functions, celebrations, and gatherings to strengthen your bond with loved ones.

  • Participate in school clubs or activities: These extracurricular activities help you develop social connections while balancing academic life.

Being involved with your community helps you maintain strong relationships, which in turn makes it easier to balance your priorities.

Conclusion

Balancing school, bowling, and family life as a student may seem like a difficult task, but it’s entirely possible with the right strategies. By prioritizing time management, setting goals, developing mental toughness, and building a supportive network, you can thrive in all aspects of your life. Remember, it’s not about perfection—it’s about finding balance and making intentional choices that allow you to succeed without compromising your well-being.
